Why do I need Will storage?
A Will only does its job if it can be found. Stored at home, it can be lost, damaged, or destroyed. If the original cannot be produced, it may be treated as though it never existed.
- Lost or damaged Wills cause delays. Executors need the original to begin the process, and even minor damage can lead to questions at the worst possible time
- A Will that can’t be found may be disregarded. The courts default to intestacy, meaning the law, not you, decides who inherits.
- An outdated Will can cause just as much harm. People change, families grow, and a Will written years ago may no longer reflect your wishes or your assets.

Keeping your Will at home might seem convenient, but it carries real risks. It can be damaged by water, fire, or general wear over time. It can be misplaced, or in some cases deliberately destroyed by someone who disagrees with its contents. If your executors don’t know exactly where to look, valuable time can be lost at an already difficult moment.
Writing a Will takes thought, care, and planning. If something happens to it, you won’t be around to put it right.
Simply get in touch with us by phone, email, or through our online form and let us know what you’d like to change. We’ll talk you through your options and make sure any updates reflect your wishes accurately. Once agreed, we’ll prepare the revised document and arrange for it to be signed and witnessed before returning it to storage.
A copy is not an acceptable substitute. When an original Will cannot be produced, the courts automatically assume the testator destroyed it deliberately, and the burden falls on your executors to prove otherwise.
To even attempt to use a copy, your executors face a lengthy legal process, gathering witness affidavits, sworn statements, and a full account of how the original was lost.
Even then, the courts may still reject the application entirely.
A valid original Will saves your loved ones significant time, money, and stress at an already difficult time. Professional storage ensures it’s there when they need it.
Once your Will is complete, we write to your executors with instructions on how to obtain it, along with guidance and resources to help them with their role. We also register every Will we prepare with the National Will Register as standard, whether you store it with us or not.
We don’t recommend requesting your original Will; we usually send copies to avoid damaging it. However, if you must see the original document, please get in touch, and we will send it within fourteen days of receiving your request.
